Manufacturing

We are the only briquette manufacturing company in Sri Lanka that produces coconut shell charcoal in-house within our own furnaces. This gives us full control of the raw material manufacturing process, enabling us to produce premium quality briquettes with a high carbon content.

With a land extent of 2 acres our factory is located in Pannala in the Sabaragamuwa Province. The main factory building has  a ground floor of 12,000 sq ft and upper floor of 4,000 sq ft.

SOURCING OF COCONUT SHELLS

Most households in Sri Lanka consume coconuts for cooking and the shells are typically sold to shell collectors and collection centres.

We as a company mainly purchase coconut shells from sellers that source shells from households rather than Copra mills and DC mills. We found that the shells coming from the mills were either wet or not as clean as the household collections.

Making ends meet can be challenging for poor families. So, to give a helping hand, we have set up a few shell collection points in community areas where low-income households are able to convert shells into rupees.

Also, in order support poor schools in neighbouring villages, we have arranged coconut shell collection points in a few rural schools. The funds collected pay for basic school requirements.

CHARCOAL MAKING IN SRI LANKA

Coconut shell charcoal making process can be a green choice, offering a truly sustainable product for the long term. As long as coconut plantations are managed in a sustainable manner, the resource is fully renewable.

After studying all charcoal making methods used in Sri Lanka, we decided to use the latest technology of ‘horizontal furnace using the pyrolysis method’. So, we commissioned purpose-built high carbon steel horizontal barrel type furnaces using the pyrolysis method that also include the latest gas separation technology. The five-chamber gas separation system enables us to extract all the gases, vapours, wood vinegar and tar that is created during the carbonizing process enabling us to produce high carbon charcoal with minimal volatile substances and moisture, without polluting the environment.

Our furnaces are 5ft in diameter and 12ft in length, with an input capacity of 2500kg coconut shells per cycle producing an output of 1000kg charcoal with approximately 5500 cubic meters of gas over 8 hours. The monthly capacity per furnace is 60MT of charcoal. By controlling the heat settings and burning times we are able to consistently maintain the superior quality of our charcoal.
